Our Impact
This page shares the real outcomes of our work.
Everyday moments where access to the right technology helps people move forward, stay connected, or feel less alone.
The stories below show what happens when refurbished technology reaches the right people at the right time.
Impact on individuals
From Isolation to Empowerment
Michael, a veteran, had been feeling increasingly isolated. With an outdated phone and more services moving online, everyday tasks and access to support had become difficult.
After receiving a refurbished laptop and Wi-Fi hub from furbd through Forces Employment Charity, things began to change. Reliable access to technology meant Michael could get online, access support services, and feel more connected day to day.
“I’ve been able to access physical health support, listen to music and read the news. It’s helped me feel more connected and given me something to focus on.”
With the right tools in place, Michael is now able to access the help he needs and enjoy everyday moments that were previously out of reach.
Finding direction and building confidence
After a bereavement, Marie was feeling unsure about her next steps. She had a clear ambition to work with children but lacked the experience and qualifications to move forward.
With support from Tandem and Tandem Hub, Marie was able to rebuild her confidence and take practical steps towards her goal. She received help updating her CV, finding the right course, and securing a voluntary placement at her daughter’s school.
That placement gave Marie the chance to work one to one with students who were struggling, supporting their communication, confidence and learning. Alongside this, a refurbished laptop from furbd gave her the tools she needed to complete her studies, stay organised and keep progressing.
Marie has since passed her course with distinction, completed additional CPD training, and gained her Teaching Assistant qualification with a focus on supporting SEN students. She is now on the school payroll and applying for a full time role.
Impact on families and communities
Supporting a new start in Stockton
When families arrive in Stockton after fleeing conflict, settling into a new life can feel overwhelming. For one family, supporting their young son to adapt to a new language, school and environment was an immediate challenge.
After being referred through the Stockton Borough Council Migration Support team, furbd provided their son with a refurbished tablet. That single device helped him stay connected to his Ukrainian teacher, continue his studies online, and begin building confidence with English at home.
With access to the right technology, he was able to engage more confidently at school, build friendships and feel more settled in his new surroundings.
For his family, the tablet became a simple but important tool in helping their child adjust and thrive during a period of major change. It’s a reminder of how access to technology can support learning, confidence and a sense of belonging when it’s needed most.
Building connections in Hartlepool
Refurbished tablets and mobile phones are helping people stay connected through a recent delivery to LilyAnne’s Wellbeing.
The tablets are helping people develop new skills, manage Universal Credit accounts, and stay connected with essential services and loved ones. Meanwhile, mobile phones are providing a lifeline for individuals experiencing homelessness, helping them maintain vital contacts and work toward stability.
Trevor from LilyAnne’s shared his heartfelt gratitude for the donation, highlighting the incredible impact these devices will have on their clients.
This is a simple example of how refurbished technology, shared locally, helps strengthen communities and open up new opportunities.
Keeping families connected when it matters most
In healthcare settings, technology can offer comfort as well as connection.
Refurbished tablets provided to a local hospice helped patients stay in touch with family and friends when being together in person was not always possible. They were used to record messages, share memories and take part in important moments.
For patients and families alike, these devices offered reassurance, closeness and a way to stay connected during deeply emotional times.
What this impact creates
These stories show how access to technology shapes everyday life. People are able to stay connected to learning, work and support. Families feel less isolated. Confidence and independence grow.
The impact also reaches beyond individuals. Refurbished devices support charities, community groups and organisations that rely on technology to deliver vital services, helping that support reach further.
Each story is different, but the outcome is shared. Access opens doors.
Sustainability built in
The human cost of e-waste
Electronic waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams worldwide. When usable technology is thrown away, environmental harm increases and opportunities to support people are lost.
The biggest impact comes from making new devices
Most of a device’s environmental impact happens before it is ever used, through raw material extraction, manufacturing and global transport. Keeping existing technology in use helps avoid that impact being repeated.
Reuse creates shared benefit
Refurbishing and reusing technology reduces waste while keeping devices available for learning, work, healthcare and connection. The same action supports people and lowers environmental harm.
A practical response to a growing problem
Sustainability is about making better choices with what we already have. By extending the life of technology, we reduce carbon emissions, limit waste and create positive outcomes for people and communities at the same time. This is sustainability that works in practice.
Building something fairer
This page captures just some of what’s possible.
The impact continues quietly, through everyday moments where access to technology makes life a little easier, helping create a fairer society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
